Introduction
What is Sofritas? Sofritas is braised tofu made with a diversity of aromatics and ingredients. According to the Chipotle website, their sofas remain made with bell pepper, chipotle pepper, cumin, garlic, onion, tomato, and many other ingredients. We use sofrito, a blend of aromatics used as a cuisine base to take care of many of the elements on this list. It’s the magic ingredient that makes this recipe incredibly easy.

What is Sofritas and its Ingredients
- Oil – Use olive oil or any other high-temperature neutral oil. It contains vegetable or canola oil.
- Tofu – Be definite to use firm tofu! Extra firm tofu will not work for this recipe. It will turn out to be too hard.
- Cumin seeds – Cumin germs will give the dish a warm, earthy flavour. It’s a must!
- Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Paste – This comes in a box. To retain heat, use a chipotle pepper. Omit it altogether. However, you will still need to use adobo sauce. It is where the base of the flavour will come from. Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce can remain in most grocery stores in the “ethnic” section. Or, find them at Latin/Mexican grocery stores.
- Sofrito – If you love sofrito, you will know why this ingredient is crucial in this recipe! Sofrito has all the aromatics you need, including peppers, onions, garlic, and cilantro. I highly recommend doing it yourself. If you don’t have a sofrito, you can add these individual ingredients to the blender in place of the sofrito:
- 1/2 onion (chopped) and also
- 1/2 green bell pepper (chopped) and also
- 1/2 red bell pepper (chopped) and also
- Two garlic cloves (chopped/grated) and also
- 1-2 tbsp cilantro (chopped) and also
- Red Wine Vinegar – Apple cider vinegar can also remain used.
- Tomato Paste – This is where the umami will come in! The tomato paste will also help thicken the sauce for the sofritas.
- The water
- Salt
